MUSIC OF THE DAY: K'NAAN - WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE

K'NAAN

K'NAAN recorded the above song which is the cover of one Bob Dylan's "With God on our side" . He did the song, with substantially new lyrics, with his own desperate wartime childhood history woven into it.

It’s a movie and the whole world is viewing it
And the popcorn is dreams torn, but we’re always chewing it.
(They said) Design’s by God but the costumes by the devil
And the screenplay is adapted from a book that’s embezzled.
This is where I grew up.
This is where I grew proud.
This is where neighbors never say music is too loud.
This is where the streets have no name, but they have history.
This is loss is victory.

Oh my name it ain’t nothing; my age it means less.
The country I come from could be like the rest.
I was taught and brought up there, laws to abide
And the land that I live in has God on his side.

I was young; I grew. I could tie my shoe.
I was blind, but I knew that I would always see blue.
Blue seas I see through on the bottom I’ll meet you
And when we come up for a breath would you mind if I kiss you?
Childhood came up for the kiss, but it slips its pain in with mist
And the sunny skies came and I missed it,
Vanished and windswept.
Landed and we slept in the arms of convenience, blanket obedience.

Now the Somali-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too was soon laid away
And the names of our warlords
I was made to memorize.
With guns in their hands, they said,
God’s on their side.
I had an undying wish to keep from dying.
I had an untimely hitch keep me from climbing
But I climbed the hitch itself and I tried flying.
I had an uprising in my soul.
The left was fight in the right
And the right was fight in the light
And the light was blind in the night
And the night woke up in tears
When my fingers went to wipe them
They became a poem but to write them
They would have to speak tears in another language
That would take years.
So now as I’m leavin’
I’m weary as Hell
The confusion I’m feelin’
Ain’t no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God’s on your side then, would you ever need war?

NIGHTFALL by Eluwa Chisom

Torn Apart from the day's daunting penance
For tills, ills and unending wills,
Like a Victim chased by a pack of wolves,
We escape into your waiting arms.

Curdle me to Sleep, O nightfall's gentle embrace,
the air cold as death, meet tuneful lullaby of tranquil,
The Mighty clouds slumber with the dark,
As every whisper holds my spirit back.

The Moon comes out to Play
With the happy stars and nocturnals awake,
As the Cities sing in Silence,
The sun runs to hide its face.

And so with haste we smite our innocent mats,
Doomed by our bodies laid aback,
Like a faithful slave to its master,
Carries us through the dark.

MUSIC OF THE DAY... K'NAAN - 70 EXCUSES

Okay I've decided to dedicate this week to posting a few of K'naan's songs and today its gonna be 70 Excuses.

Mr Warsame in this piece he titled "70 excuses" was able to paint pictures with words to a melody just like every other good artist should...

You could add your own lines to this great piece, you could also draw out your own meanings and interpretation to this song, it really is that broad...

I could've been a doctor were not for degree
I could've been a winner were not for defeat
I could've been richer were not for the taxes
I could've been a scholar were not for classes
I could've been a rebel were not for a cause
I could've been employed were not for the boss
I could've been loved

We could've been artists were not for the music
We could've been on time were not for excuses
We could've been diamonds were not for the penny
We could've been special were not for the many
We could've been patient were not for the waiting
We could've been committed were not for the stain
We could've been loved

A LIL SOMETHING

I still love your views and cup your inner views
Got me playing detective searching for some clues
I wanted to take you home show you where I've grown
Coffee down in Kenya then the swimming Cameron
But you're in California working on your script
Young and beautiful just want to make the most of it
You could've been loved

I could've been free were not for the past
I could've been first place were in not for the last.

We know how Excuses eventually leads to stagnation, yes! stagnation, we keep claiming that there's a barrier or obstacle up the road preventing you from taking the first step, when you could take that first bold step and cross that river when you get there!  and so we remain in that very position without making any progress at all.

Even the Holy Bible tells of a man... "a lazy man folds his hands and would not go out" to make a livelihood or a life out of himself because of an excuse "that there is a Lion in the streets" that man like every other illustrated in the song "70 excuses" would end up with regrets and wishing that he had taken that very first Bold step...

Whatever your dream is, start off now! why wait till tomorrow when you could actually do it today???
Why wait for the lion to die when you could actually see it dead! lolz!

Do not procrastinate! get rid of excuses and start off today!!! cheers!!!

MUSIC OF THE DAY... K'NAAN - THE WALL

K'naan was born Keinan Abdi Warsame in 1978. He is a Somali Canadian poet, rapper, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. Yeah he really is a complete package... :)

He is one poet I think would appeal to any one with his unique style of presenting his words and conveying his message.
I remember I got so obsessed with him some years back that I attempted sketching his picture off his album cover... LOLz! #Nohomo though... This song "THE WALL" off album titled "Country, God or the girl" is one of his very many works I find so interesting so I decided to share it so you all can have your say on what you think about  it... Cheers!!

You don't have to launch your missile to break down my defense
you don't need a fighter jet to end our arguments
we don't have to be like everyone to use our common sense
so I guess its time we burned the documents
cause I'm crazy and you crazy
so there aint a thing to lose
except our pride its suicide of all we ever knew
in some ways we're East and West the wall is coming down
sometimes we celebrate other times we say what have we done
and i feel you holding in and I'm holding on too
no matter what we say or do the wall is coming down

The wall is coming down
Down down down
I see you coming 'round
'Cause your wall is coming down
I don't have to build a fortress to hide what you can't see
I don't have to be the master and hold onto the key
Sometimes I feel so certain that we were meant to be
But I guess it's fine if you disagree

'Cause I'm crazy and you're crazy and there ain't a thing to lose
Except our pride it's suicide of all we ever knew
In some ways we're east and west and the wall is coming down
Some times we celebrate other times we say what have we done
And I feel you holding on and I'm holding on too
But no matter what we say or do the wall is coming down
The wall is coming down
Down down down
I see you coming 'round
'Cause the wall is coming down

So whenever we turn the wheel peace talking make a deal
You remind me of Palestine and I feel so Israel
Look at all the walls I've built and look at all the guards you've killed
And if the gates would open would it be more loving
Or would all my fears turn real
So for now I suppress your demonstration and I undress you here's the question
Is this love making or masturbation if every touch feels like instigation
I'm so sure if we all trusted the force of love
Even if our past is awful also break our pride in the torso
Whatever it takes for down these walls go

In some ways we're east and west and the wall is coming down
Some times we celebrate other times we say what have we done
And I feel you holding on and I'm holding on too
But no matter what we say or do the wall is coming down
The wall is coming down
Down down down
I see you coming 'round
'Cause the wall is coming down
Don't leave without having a say on what you think about this song.... Bless!!!
